Sunrise, Alsace. Ahh…. I traveled to Bas Rhin in June 2014 on a genealogical adventure, searching for information about my great-grandfather, Fritz Kieber’s family. While exploring Alsace, I came upon this delightful window. Struck by the light, the flowers, the mask, the birdhouse, I was captivated. The painting was created from a photo I took in Wissembourg, a small city near the German border. The people and relatives we met were friendly and happy. Our guide said it was the wine! Whatever it was, I was in love and wanted to express not only the beauty, but the joy and life the scene imbued. I kept the wooden mask in the picture as a portent not only of my ancestral ghosts, but the ghost of the absent gardener as well.
May all your sunrises be this lovely.
